‘Would Have Never Seen This 10-15 Years Ago’- Michael Hussey Attributes Australia’s Disastrous Performance Against India To T20 Cricket

Australia suffered a further setback in the second Test against India, falling by six wickets on Day 3 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, on Sunday, after losing the first Test match by an innings and 132 runs. Several former players and commentators cited Australia’s use of the reverse sweep stroke against Indian spinners as the main cause of their batting collapse in New Delhi, where India had a 2-0 lead in the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

In the second innings, when Australia was bowled out for 113, Ravindra Jadeja caused the majority of the damage with a seven-wicket haul in 12.1 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin also claimed three wickets during this time. Both spinners performed similarly, as they had done in the previous Test match as well.

Australia Got Their Plans Wrong: Michael Hussey

Michael Hussey, a former cricketer, provided a different explanation for why his team’s batting collapsed and blamed the T20 sport. Hussey was questioned on Fox Cricket if the reverse sweep strokes used by his nation’s hitters were a result of their playing a lot of T20 cricket. For instance, Jadeja removed no. 11 Matthew Kuhnemann for a two-ball duck during the second innings after he performed a brilliant reverse sweep.

“Yes, probably. I mean we are seeing it a lot more in those short form games. We are seeing ramps and all kinds of different shots, which we would never have seen, 10-15 years ago. You know, that’s a fair comment”, Hussey said.

“It’s about when you choose. It is a good shot to have in your armory, but it is about playing it at the right time against the right type of bowler in the right conditions and I don’t think they got that right”, he further added.

Australia will head to Indore for the third Test commencing on March 1 in an effort to mount a comeback. The fourth and final Test, which will take place in Ahmedabad, is set to begin on March 9.
