Another day brought more records and milestones for German footballing legend Thomas Müller. The legend himself sought to downplay them after Bayern’s 2-1 win over Stuttgart.

An expertly prepared assist on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s 2-0 in the 62nd minute of Bayern’s 2-1 win over Stuttgart on Saturday evening gave Thomas Müller his sixth scorer point in as many league fixtures. With the exception of the week against Gladbach – when he was subbed off early as part of a tactical change – Müller has registered either a goal or assist in all of his league starts dating back to matchday 18.
One can surely say that – without a doubt – the latest rumors of the German footballing legend’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. The 33-year-old remains as important to the only club he’s ever represented as ever. As emphasized by FCB trainer Julian Nagelsmann after last week’s win over 1. FC Union Berlin, Müller was definitely back in the team for good.
Nagelsmann sounded suspiciously like former Bayern head-coach in his post-match remarks following Saturday’s win. Van Gaal famously once stated that “Müller always plays”. Nagelsmann went ahead and committed to starting Müller against PSG on Wednesday, saying “If he’s healthy, he’ll play”. The commitment to the national team hero continues on.
Müller himself was asked how it felt, courtesy of the assist, to reach the milestone of 300 scorer points for the club. Having tied club legend and current club boss Oliver Kahn with 430 league appearances last week, Müller moved into second place of all-time with number 431. Only Sepp Maier (473 league appearances) stands ahead of him.
“When you’re older and have been around for a long time, the milestones keep coming,” Müller told the Sky-Germany mics afterwards, “but 300 scorer points makes me happy. It’s still also about performing. I don’t want to hear ‘Müller always’ plays. I try to perform. If the coach feels I can do the team any good, he puts me in.”
When it came to the appearance record, Müller went straight for the pejorative.
“It doesn’t matter that I’ve overtaken someone with my deployments,” Müller said, “We could conceivably collect statistics noting I wore the same underwear 420 times in a row.
It is not known what brand of underwear Müller prefers to gird himself with on game days.
