Villarreal vs Getafe Preview
The Monday night game in LaLiga takes place at the Ceramica this week and it’s safe to say both sides could really do with a positive result. Villarreal have lost their last 4 league games, falling into mid-table as a result, while Getafe remain in the thick of a relegation battle.
While they are still only 3 points off the top six, Villarreal are currently nearer the relegation zone than the Champions League places and that’s a pretty poor state of affairs for a side that was involved in a UCL Semi-Final only last year. Quique Setien will come under intense scrutiny again if they don’t get back to winning ways here following defeats to Rayo, Elche, Barcelona and Mallorca.
They lost 4-2 in the Balearic Islands last weekend with Manu Trigueros’ 21st minute red card not helping matters. The injury absence of Gerard Moreno has also been a factor in their recent struggles but it’s possible the striker could play some role here. That would be a significant boost to their chances of breaking down what is likely to be quite a cautious Getafe side.
Quique Sanchez-Flores has also been under pressure but his position feels slightly more secure after a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Valencia last time out. It was a bad weekend for Getafe though with lots of bottom half teams winning and despite that victory, they come into this game 19th and 2 points from safety once more. Things certainly appear to be heading towards a nervy end to the season for the South Madrid side.
Getafe fans can take some encouragement from some of their recent displays though. They are unbeaten in 3 coming into this having also held neighbours Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano to draws in recent weeks. This is the latest in a tricky run of fixtures but there are more winnable games ahead with Girona, Cadiz and Sevilla their next three opponents, with two of those matches at home.

Villarreal aren’t particularly convincing right now and while Gerard Moreno’s possible return should give them a bit more in the final third here, a full strength Getafe look well equipped to come here and make this another frustrating outing for Villarreal. The visitors have been tough to break down of late, not conceding more than once in any of their last 5 league games, and they may have enough to get something from this.
