United’s Martinez out for rest of season, Varane to miss a few weeks

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season due to a right foot injury that requires surgery.

Martinez, 25, suffered the non-contact injury Thursday in the final minutes of United’s Europa League match against Sevilla. Sevilla players Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel, who won the World Cup with fellow Argentinian defender Martinez, carried their countryman off the pitch.

Raphael Varane, who went down with his own foot injury during the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, is expected to return in a few weeks.

That would still rule him out of Sunday’s Premier League contest against Nottingham Forest and next Thursday’s second leg in Seville.

“We have very good replacements with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw,” manager Erik ten Hag said, according to The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson. “We have players who can replace them but, of course, it is a miss.”

The Red Devils have at least 11 matches remaining in the season, including an FA Cup semifinal on April 23 against Brighton & Hove Albion.
