Tsitsipas is a name that has been etched on the trophy down in Monte Carlo more than once before.
But somehow we didn’t expect Stefanos to make it a hat-trick of victories in the Principality
After all, the Greek god’s form at the business end of tournaments has been a little suspect for a while.
And such was the dominance of Jannik Sinner so far this year that we had started to wonder where on earth he could possibly fail.
Then there was the anticipated resurgence of Novak Djokovic, who hasn’t yet won a tournament in 2024.
None of this seemed to point to Stefanos Tsitsipas reigning supreme once more in one of his happiest hunting grounds.
Tsitsipas is back with a bang! Can Stefanos also be a major player at Wimbledon 2024, alongside the likes of Sinner, Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz?
So far, Stef has struggled to fulfil his promise on grass. But you get the feeling that all he needs is a little early momentum – and the noisy support of those passionate Greek fans. Then anything could happen!
He must have taken great confidence from a simply stunning semi-final win over the seemingly unbeatable Sinner. Particularly since he almost had to come back from the dead in order to gain his unlikely victory.
And when it came to the final, the more experienced man was not to be denied in one of his favourite settings.
Tsitsipas defeated Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4. Though he was slightly less ruthless in the second set, the result was really never in doubt.
And so Stef grasped a third Monte Carlo title in four years. And this one was perhaps the most surprising of all.
Tsitsipas is also the man we want to surprise us most of all at Wimbledon 2024.
A deep run has been a long time coming. Could this be his year?
