Stuttgart and Leverkusen inseparable in cagey stalemate

By Ultan Corcoran   @UltanCorcoran

Stuttgart knew a victory over Leverkusen today would lift them clear of the relegation zone with two games to play. Meanwhile, ‘Die Werkself’ could put themselves back into the European football spots with a favourable result. Coach Xabi Alonso made several changes after the midweek foray in Rome as Bakker, Demirbay, Azmoun, and Adli rotated into the line-up. In the end, a cagey affair with a penalty for either team resulted in a 1-1 draw as Stuttgart slip to 17th in the Bundesliga table.

There was a let off for Stuttgart inside the opening ten minutes as Diaby crossed from the left wing. Serdar Azmoun was picking up the central position but scuffed his shot to spare Bredlow’s goal. A similar act would follow in the Leverkusen box on 17 minutes – Silas picked out Endo in the box who miscued as he swiped a boot at thin air.

The build up play from the hosts was slow at best and reflected the nerves within the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Silas appeared to be the biggest threat in the Swabian ranks. A snapshot from Guirassy after the half hour mark made for a decent chance in what was a very quiet first half of action.

The second-half kicked into life when Stuttgart won a penalty when Palacios felled Endo inside the box. Serhou Guirassy remained ice cool in spite of the lengthy delay prior to the spot kick. A delightful Panenka finish was the last thing many had in mind when the French striker stepped up. However, arbiter Willenborg would swiftly point to the spot in favour of Leverkusen when Bredlow clattered into Tapsoba. Another delay ensued but Palacios tucked the penalty home for 1-1 on 70 minutes.

Vagnoman would spurn a guilt-edged chance swifty after when he was left unmarked at the back post. Meanwhile, substitute Wirtz came close to finding Tapsoba in the box with a pinpoint freekick delivery. Chris Fuehrich came within inches of supplying the perfect pass for Millot who lay dejected on the turf.
