Sevilla vs Villarreal Preview
Sevilla return to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, three days on from a magnificent victory over Manchester United, the undoubted highlight of their season to date. They still have work to do to secure safety in LaLiga, but three points here would be a huge step towards doing that.
The appointment of José Luis Mendilibar has proved something of a masterstroke by a club that hasn’t got a huge amount right over the past twelve months in truth. Sevilla have taken 7 points from their 3 games under their new boss in LaLiga to build a healthy advantage on the relegation zone while their 3-0 win over United on Thursday means they’re now into yet another Europa League Semi-Final.
That tie takes place after a busy four game stint in LaLiga where Sevilla will be hoping to move past 40 points and then they’d surely be in a position to fully focus all their efforts on their European tie. This won’t be easy given there will surely be a bit of mental and physical fatigue following their exploits on this ground three nights earlier, but they can rely on their crowd to give them another lift.
Villarreal will be tough opposition despite a surprise defeat for Quique Setien’s side at home to Real Valladolid last time out. They’d won 5 of their previous 6 league games though and are targeting a fourth straight away win here. They can take confidence from a fantastic performance at the Santiago Bernabeu a fortnight ago, but they will feel like they missed a good opportunity to close in on the top four last weekend.
Gerard Moreno remains sidelined so Setien will have a slight dilemma over who starts up front here. Jose Luis Morales has been used in the role and provides a big counter-attacking threat but they have also used Giovani Lo Celso as a false nine to some effect and that could be the way they go here.

Sevilla will find it tough to produce another performance of the level of Thursday night just 72 hours later. Villarreal will come here hungry for the win and they should be the fresher of the two teams. They’ve been playing well in recent weeks and despite an off day last weekend, there’s every chance they bounce back here with three more points.
