Sevilla vs Real Betis Preview
It’s derby day in Seville this weekend as these old rivals meet again in Spain’s biggest city derby. Sevilla are fresh from another remarkable European success, but they are 8 points behind Betis in the league standings and the visitors would guarantee themselves the higher finishing position with a win at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
That’s not something many teams have managed in recent months. Sevilla have been on a roll since appointing José Luis Mendilibar and they reached the Europa League Final for the 7th time with a 2-1 win in Extra Time against Juventus on Thursday night. Their showdown with Roma in Budapest is less than a fortnight away but they’ve three league games to squeeze in first and they’ll want as many points as possible to give them a shot at European qualification via their league position, even if they were to lose to Jose Mourinho’s side.
The winners of that game will of course go into the Champions League and it’s going to be a bit of a balancing act in terms of team selection for Mendilibar over this hectic final fortnight. The importance of this game is such that he will surely name something very close to his best eleven here, with only those players who are really low on energy after playing for two hours against Juve likely to be in line for a rest.
You have to feel for Betis fans to some extent. Their huge fanbase was finally starting to relish their newfound status as top dogs in Seville and only a matter of months ago, there was little doubt that they had the stronger team with their rivals in an unlikely relegation battle. However Betis have faded a little bit in the second half of the campaign, exiting the Europa League and slipping out of serious top four contention in LaLiga.
They have done well to ensure the wheels haven’t completely fallen off though and come into this game in better spirits after back-to-back league wins over Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano, two sides who were hoping to hunt them down in the race for European qualification. Manuel Pellegrini’s side negotiated both matches well and are on course for a place in the Europa League again and victory here would all but guarantee that.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Real Betis
Betis will be hoping that Sevilla come into this game tired and unable to cope with the intensity of what is always a passionate, high energy derby. However Mendilibar’s side have coped remarkably well with the busy schedule until this point and the noise of the crowd may help drag them to the finish line here. On current form, you’d back Sevilla against just about anybody at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and they may edge this derby.
