Sevilla vs Manchester United Preview

Sevilla face Manchester United in the 2nd Leg of their UEFA Europa League Quarter-Final this week. After dramatically clinching a draw in the 1st Leg thanks to two late own goals, the Andalusians now have a chance in a tie they were huge underdogs for.

They can also hopefully approach this game with a stronger eleven than took to the field in the 1st Leg. Their weekend victory away to relegation rivals Valencia seriously eases any worries they may have had in terms of dropping out of the top flight altogether. They remain unbeaten in their four games in all competitions under new boss José Luis Mendilibar with two 2-0 wins and two 2-2 draws since he replaced Jorge Sampaoli.

While it’d be an exaggeration to say they are suddenly playing totally convincing football, there has been a simplification of things that appears to have helped these players produce more convincing performances. They’ll still be underdogs on Thursday but with a big Sanchez-Pizjuan crowd behind them, in their favourite competition, you can never totally write Sevilla off.

Manchester United will obviously feel like they have already massively let Sevilla off the hook in this tie. They were 2-0 up and cruising after only 21 minutes last week but they failed to kill the game off and must now try to regain their advantage in Spain.

They will be hampered by a host of selection problems too which really do offer some hope to Sevilla here. With their first choice centre-backs both out, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof will most likely deputise in central defence while key midfielder Bruno Fernandes is suspended. Top scorer Marcus Rashford is also a doubt, although he has trained this week, suggesting he could be fit to at least feature off the bench.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Manchester United (Aggregate: 4-3)

Winning the Europa League this year would be Sevilla’s most surprising and perhaps greatest European triumph yet. They are not a top side but there is plenty of experience when it comes to nights like this and given Manchester United’s considerable selection issues and the problems they’ve had all season away from home in hostile atmospheres, a surprise Sevilla win is not impossible by any means.
