Sevilla vs Juventus Preview

Sevilla and Juventus face off at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Thursday night with the home team and their passionate supporters dreaming of yet another Europa League Final. It’s a real possibility after the Spanish side claimed an excellent 1-1 draw in Turin in the 1st Leg.

It probably should have been better than that. Even by the standards of their recent revival, Sevilla were excellent and created a string of chances, one of which Youssef En-Nesyri converted in the 1st Half. Juve only salvaged a draw, seven minutes into 2nd Half Stoppage Time through Federico Gatti. That certainly keeps the Italians right in this tie but the hosts will be hoping another sold out Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan can be the difference maker yet again for them in Europe.

Sevilla bounced back from the disappointment of that late goal last Thursday with an impressive 2nd Half display at Real Valladolid on Sunday as they won 3-0 to maintain their strong overall form. They have the derby with Real Betis to look forward to on Sunday too with European qualification via the league suddenly a possibility once more so this will be a pivotal few days as José Luis Mendilibar looks to extend what has been an absolutely remarkable transformation of this Sevilla side under his leadership.

This game is everything for Juventus though as far as their season is concerned. They are out of the Italian Cup and Napoli have already won Serie A. There is little prospect of them dropping out of the top four though so Champions League football is already all but guaranteed for the Turin club next term.

They have some high quality players who are capable of rising to the big occasion but they’ll need a better performance than what they produced in the 1st Leg. They cruised to a 2-0 win over Cremonese at the weekend in the league with Paul Pogba making his first start of the season after a lengthy injury absence. The Frenchman picked up a fresh injury though and we are likely to see a similar starting XI to the one that took to the field last Thursday for Juventus.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Juventus (Agg: 3-2)

Sevilla’s season has been a wild affair and it’s something of a miracle that they’ve made it quite this far in Europe given how poor they were for most of this campaign. Even during the opening games under Mendilibar, it wasn’t always convincing but they’ve started to look like a properly competitive and capable side again in recent weeks and with home advantage at one of Europe’s loudest stadiums, they’ve every chance of progressing to yet another Europa League Final.
