Sevilla vs Fenerbahce Preview
Sevilla were dealt the most favourable draw of the three remaining Spanish clubs in the Europa League and they will fancy their chances of making it through to the Quarter Finals. Fenerbahce form the opposition, 15 years on from a thrilling Champions League Last 16 tie between the clubs, which the Turkish giants won on penalties after a 5-5 aggregate draw.
Home advantage is clearly going to be key in this tie and Sevilla want a lead to take to Istanbul next week. That was also the case in the last round where they saw off PSV 3-0 at home, before losing the return 2-0 in Eindhoven. They were hanging on a bit at the end of that match and despite some better results since the turn of the year, there are still plenty of doubts when it comes to Jorge Sampaoli and this team.
They’ve not won any of their 4 competitive games since the 1st Leg against PSV, losing the last 3. A humbling 6-1 defeat away to Atletico Madrid at the weekend was the latest setback and it leaves them 17th again in LaLiga and once more in the thick of the relegation scrap. This game will provide a welcome distraction but they will need a much more convincing performance here than what we saw in Madrid.
Fenerbahce may also look upon this as quite a favourable draw for them given Sevilla’s current plight and the quality of some of the other sides left in the competition. They are having a pretty good season, currently sitting 2nd in the Turkish Super Lig, 6 points behind rivals Galatasaray.
They are also very experienced European campaigners and made smooth progress in the group stage of this season’s Europa League. 4 wins and 2 draws ensured they topped a group which featured Dynamo Kyiv, Rennes and AEK Larnaca and they’ve been scoring freely too with 2+ goals netted in 9 of their 10 European outings this term.
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Fenerbahce
Sevilla’s home form has been good of late but defensive absentees and their horrorshow at the weekend in Madrid, suggests a relatively high-scoring Fenerbahce side will find a breakthrough here. Jorge Sampaoli’s team may still have enough at the other end to win the game but it’s hard to see them working up the kind of advantage they secured against PSV in the last round.
