Serie A: Footballer drowns in Amsterdam canal while on holiday: It’s inexplicable

Italian footballer Gabriele Gallani, captain of fifth-tier ASD Piccardo Traversetolo, has died in Amsterdam after falling into a canal.

The 24-year-old, who was enjoying a holiday with friends in the Netherlands, drowned on Friday after falling into a canal in the Kloveniersburgwal district.

According to reports, the footballer’s disappearance was detected immediately, as Gallani was walking behind friends before he fell into the water. There was eight friends walking at the time, according to the Italian press.

When divers managed to rescue him, the young Italian, who was rushed by helicopter to hospital, was in a critical condition. Gallani died in hospital hours later.

The 24-year-old was scheduled to present a thesis for a master’s degree in engineering at the University of Parma next week and had started an internship at Lamborghini.

Police have launched an investigation into Gallani‘s death, and how he could have fallen into the water.

Luca Prampolini, president of ASD Piccardo Traversetolo, told ‘Parma Today’ that “Gabriele Gallani‘s death is inexplicable: he didn’t drink, he didn’t smoke, he was a sportsman and an excellent swimmer”.

ASD Piccardo Traversetolo have reported the death of Gallani and paid tribute to their captain on their social media: “A silent leader on the field. An example for his teammates. A guy with a kind and respectful soul. We will carry you forever in our hearts. Goodbye Gabri.”

The team are based in the Province of Parma.
