Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must spend £200million to take Wrexham to the Premier League, says expert

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been told they must spent £200 million to achieve their dream of taking the club to the Premier League.

The Welsh side finally achieved promotion from the National League this season after an investment of around £10 million from the Hollywood actors, but they’re going to have to inject a whole lot more if they want to continue to take the club up through the divisions.

That’s according to Dr Dan Plumley, who explained the challenges involved of trying to do just what the Reynolds and McElhenney are aiming for.

Dr Plumley told Grosvenor Sport: “It’s important to look at the revenue gap between leagues. It scales according to the league, so the revenue gap between League One and League Two is about £1,000,000. It’s not too big. That’s the revenue gap, not investment.”

They went onto explain how it may cost £10 million to get in to League One, and another £10 million to reach the Championship. Then they tackled a potential promotion to the big one.

“When you get into the Championship, that’s the biggest gap because the revenue gap between the Championship and the Premier League is about £100 to £150 million,” he said. So for me, you’ve got to be looking to invest that to then even get to the top end of the Championship.”

The duo have been vocal about their hopes of taking their side to the Premier League but the challenge is likely to be harder than they have found it so far now they enter the Football League.

Wrexham will be favourites to win promotion from League Two next season, but they will face tougher opponents and clubs they are competing with will be richer the more they move up the pyramid.

Reynolds and McElhenney will face the task of putting their money where their mouth is, and may have to fork out 20 times the £10 million they have invested so far to reach the promised land.
