Report: Pochettino new favorite for Chelsea job after Nagelsmann pulls out

Mauricio Pochettino is the new favorite to take charge of Chelsea after Julian Nagelsmann pulled out of the running to become the next Blues manager.

The former Bayern Munich coach was involved in “several rounds” of negotiations with Chelsea officials before withdrawing due to disagreements over certain points, according to The Guardian’s Fabrizo Romano.

In the wake of Nagelsmann’s withdrawal, Pochettino, who previously coached Tottenham Hotspur, has emerged as the favorite to replace Graham Potter as Chelsea’s new permanent manager, reports David Hytner of The Guardian.

Pochettino, who’s been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer, left a positive impression after talks with Chelsea officials this week. He was previously linked with a move to Stamford Bridge earlier this season before Chelsea appointed Potter in September.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is also a candidate after sealing automatic promotion to the Premier League in his first season as the Championship club’s manager, Romano reports.

The 37-year-old is on a list of Chelsea targets that’s been trimmed down in the three weeks since Potter was fired. Kompany previously served as Belgian side Anderlecht’s coach – his first managerial role after ending his storied Manchester City career.

Luis Enrique was also among the favorites to take charge of the Blues permanently. But the former Barcelona and Spain coach is no longer under consideration because Chelsea were put off by the 52-year-old’s demands, reports Robert O’Connor of PA Media.

There’s a third manager that’s been shortlisted by Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley whose identity is unknown, reports Alex Howell of BBC Sport.

Frank Lampard has lost all four games since he was named interim manager until the end of the season.
