Real Valladolid vs Sevilla Preview
Fresh from another impressive display in Europe, Sevilla travel to the Jose Zorrilla this weekend to take on relegation threatened Real Valladolid. It’s a big match for the hosts who could really do with making their home games count in their bid for survival.
Real Valladolid are a point outside the relegation zone as it stands but they have lost their last 3 games with the early impact of Paulo Pezzolano starting to wear off. They’ve scored in every game under the Uruguayan’s stewardship so far which is testament to the impact he has made but at times they’ve been too easy to break open and it’s 22 goals conceded in 8 matches overall.
Their most recent home game ended in a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid, although that scoreline wasn’t necessarily a fair reflection of the whole game. All the signs are that Real Valladolid are going to keep trying to play positive football as they bid to stay afloat with Gonzalo Plata and Cyle Larin the men trusted with leading the line.
Sevilla meanwhile head here three days on from another excellent European display as they drew 1-1 away to Juventus in the 1st Leg of their Europa League Semi-Final. They now have a real shot of making the Final yet again as they bid to win the competition for the 7th time. José Luis Mendilibar has proved an inspired appointment and it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches this game.
Winning the Europa League perhaps now offers Sevilla their best chance of European qualification and that would fast-track them into the Champions League. However they do have an outside shot of qualifying for Europe via the league with just 3 points separating them from 7th placed Girona heading into this weekend. There will inevitably be some rotation here though with one eye on next Thursday’s 2nd Leg against the Italian giants.

Sevilla are on a remarkable run in league and Europe but it is going to be a challenge for them to keep these high levels up in two competitions over the coming weeks. Up against a Real Valladolid side that is fighting for their lives, this is a tricky game to have three days after a big effort in Turin and they may struggle to reproduce the same kind of performance here with what will surely be a much changed eleven.
