Real Valladolid vs Mallorca Preview
Sunday’s action in Spain kicks off at the Jose Zorrilla where Real Valladolid are taking on Mallorca. It’s the start of a new era in Valladolid following the sacking of Pacheta this week.
That was a decision which appeared quite harsh in many respects. Nobody can be surprised to see Real Valladolid in the relegation picture come the final 11 games of the season but they are a point and two places above the dreaded dotted line heading into this weekend and are averaging slightly more than a point per game, a return that is normally enough to stay up.
The manner of their 6-0 capitulation at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend perhaps sparked this decision and owner Ronaldo has a new man at the helm with 39 year old Paulo Pezzolano, most recently the boss of Cruzeiro in Brazil, taking over. The Uruguayan has never managed in Europe before, but did have a brief spell in LaLiga as a player with Real Mallorca during the 2009/10 season.
His first coaching stint in Spain begins with a game against his old club and while Mallorca haven’t really been in the relegation battle this season, they would only be 2 points above their opponents were they to lose this game. Looking at their recent away form, you’d have to say that’s a real possibility with 6 straight road defeats in the Spanish top flight and only one goal scored across that period.
Even their home form has tailed off a bit of late which will give Javier Aguirre plenty of food for thought heading into this match. You wonder if they perhaps missed a trick by not adding another playing who could bring a bit of quality to their final third play in January as it is quite one-dimensional at times and teams with big physical centre-backs, capable of coping with striker Vedat Muriqi, tend to negate much of Mallorca’s attacking threat.

Score Prediction: Real Valladolid 1-0 Mallorca
Paulo Pezzolano will be a new name to most fans of LaLiga, but he comes with a good track record following a successful stint in Brazil. This is a pretty good fixture to have first up against a Mallorca side that are desperately poor away from home and the hosts may just edge this one.
