Real Valladolid vs Getafe Preview

This is the key game at the bottom of LaLiga on the final weekend and the one that every other team involved in the relegation scrap will have their eyes on. Real Valladolid will be relegated if they lose it and the other five teams can relax. Should they get a point or more though, things could get very complicated indeed with all sorts of permutations and possibilities opening up, including a set of results that could yet relegate Getafe.

One of the curiosities of this six-way fight to avoid the one remaining relegation place is that all six teams are masters of their own destinies. That’s quite a unique situation but even 18th placed Real Valladolid know they will be 100% safe if they win this game as it’d guarantee that they finish above opponents Getafe.

It is possible that a draw could be enough, but this feels like a game they will most likely need to win if they want to be playing top flight football again next term following a tense goalless draw at Almeria last weekend. They were perhaps a little fortunate to take a point from that game but they have to take confidence from what happened in their most recent home outing.

A 3-1 win over champions Barcelona ended a 5 game losing streak for Paulo Pezzolano’s side and is the main reason they still go into the final weekend with a fighting chance. They have shown a bit more defensive resilience of late while continuing to offer a goal threat, particularly in the shape of Cyle Larin who has 8 goals and 3 assists in LaLiga since joining in January.

Getafe by comparison look incredibly short on attacking options currently with Enes Unal out until December with a serious injury and Borja Mayoral seemingly out of favour with recently appointed Jose Bordalas. Despite that, they still managed to score twice last weekend in a key win over Osasuna with the goals coming from two unlikely sources.

22 year old Juanmi Latasa got the first in what was his first ever LaLiga start. Meanwhile it was Jaime Mata who popped with a late winner, ending a goal drought that had spanned more than 18 months. The duo may both get starts again here, although it’s most likely going to be a defensive set-up for the visitors who know they will be safe with a draw.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Real Valladolid

INJURED Amallah, Anuar, Luis Perez
DOUBTFUL El Yamiq, Joaquin Fernandez
BANNED Monchu, Hongla

Possible XI: Masip – Olaza, Javi Sanchez, Joaquin, Fresneda – Aguado, Mesa – Machis, Plano, Plata – Larin (4-2-3-1)

Coach: Paulo Pezzolano

Getafe

INJURED Unal
DOUBTFUL Arambarri
BANNED Djene, Portu

Possible XI: Soria – Gaston, Alderete, Mitrovic, Damian – Alena, Milla, Maksimovic, Iglesias – Mata, Latasa (4-4-2)

Coach: Jose Bordalas

Score Prediction: Real Valladolid 0-0 Getafe

It’s hard to see Bordalas and Getafe doing anything much here beyond setting up in a defensive fashion and hoping to keep things tight. While Getafe are a limited team in many respects, this isn’t really the ideal fixture for Real Valladolid to have needing a victory on the final day to stay up and it could be a frustrating evening for their fans as they attempt to break down the visitors who will most likely attempt to slow the game down. That will make it tough for Pezzolano’s men to really build up a head of steam and they are in real danger of being the team that drops come 11:00 p.m. on Sunday night.
