Real Valladolid vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Atletico Madrid return to the scene of their memorable 2020/21 title triumph on Sunday night. This time, there will be spectators and as was the case then, they face a Real Valladolid side that is battling for survival.
Things have improved in Valladolid since Paulo Pezzolano took charge with vital wins over Villarreal and Girona. However they lost for the first time under his leadership in midweek with late heartbreak in a 2-1 defeat at fellow relegation candidates Valencia. Cyle Larin’s early strike gave the visitors the lead in that game, however a huge goalkeeping blunder from Jordi Masip allowed Los Che to equalise before a 93rd minute wonder goal from youngster Javi Guerra lifted the roof off Mestalla.
It’s not a terminal blow by any means for Real Valladolid. They are still 4 points above the relegation zone heading into this matchday, but that advantage could be significantly less by the time this kicks off with all of their rivals playing earlier in the weekend. Pezzolano will have to pick his players up to go again here but they do have injury doubts over Moroccan duo Selim Amallah and Jawad El Yamiq.
Atletico Madrid make the relatively short trip on the back of a 3-1 win over Mallorca. Despite conceding the opening goal in a game keeper Jan Oblak missed, Atleti were quite dominant from that point onwards with Rodrigo De Paul, Alvaro Morata and Yannick Carrasco scoring to seal the three points and an immediate response to the defeat in Barcelona.
Real Madrid’s defeat in Girona, means Atleti are now just 2 points off 2nd again and they’ll fancy their chances of overtaking their rivals given the cup distractions Carlo Ancelotti’s side have. Diego Simeone must decide whether to largely stick with the side that defeated Mallorca here or whether to opt for fresh legs with the likes of Angel Correa, Pablo Barrios and Geoffrey Kondogbia in contention for starts.

Score Prediction: Real Valladolid 1-2 Atletico Madrid
A first defeat under Paulo Pezzolano may just burst Real Valladolid’s bubble a little bit and they may find it tough going here against an Atletico side that has been pretty impressive since the turn of the year. An away win looks the most likely outcome.
