Real Sociedad and Real Madrid meet in a top four showdown in Donostia this Tuesday. With Los Blancos only four days away from the Copa del Rey Final, the hosts will be hoping to capitalise on any rotation as they aim to close in on Champions League qualification.

It has been a really good week or so for Real Sociedad with 7 points collected from their last 3 games, all of which were against top half opponents in the shape of Rayo Vallecano, Real Betis and Osasuna. They’ve had to dig in at times and have benefitted from the odd moment of good fortune but they were well worthy of their 2-0 win at El Sadar last time out with Take Kubo’s late goal killing off the match.

Those results have cemented La Real’s status as the firm favourites to clinch 4th place but the job is certainly not done. This match is the start of a sequence which sees them play all of the top three in the space of five matches. Imanol will be hoping his team can produce one big performance to upset one of those sides and with this fixture at home and potentially against a weakened Madrid XI, this might be their best opportunity.

Real Madrid are four days away from the Copa del Rey Final and seven from the 1st Leg of their UEFA Champions League Semi-Final against Manchester City. With Barcelona 11 points clear at the top of LaLiga, Carlo Ancelotti will know that the title race is effectively over and it’ll be interesting to see what he does in terms of team selection here.

Prior to and around previous European ties, he has surprised many by fielding strong teams in the league. However it’s hard to see the logic in a repeat here. He is missing a number of players already with Vini Junior and Eduardo Camavinga suspended while David Alaba, Luka Modric and Ferland Mendy are out injured. The Italian must decide whether or not to start the likes of Toni Kroos, Karim Benzema and Dani Carvajal, players he’ll need for the big cup ties coming up.
