Real Madrid vs Liverpool Preview

Real Madrid face Liverpool on Wednesday in the 2nd Leg of their UEFA Champions League Last 16 tie. Los Blancos are firmly in control after winning the 1st Leg by a 5-2 margin at Anfield and should have booked their Quarter Final place by the end of Wednesday night.

Despite falling 2-0 down early on, Real Madrid produced a fine comeback with five unanswered goals on Merseyside three weeks ago. Braces from Vini Junior and Karim Benzema send the defending champions into the 2nd Leg with a three goal advantage and it’s hard to see any way back for the Premier League side now.

It’s not always that simple with Real Madrid though. The most obvious parallel with last season’s competition is the Quarter-Final with Chelsea when they claimed a convincing 3-1 win in London in the 1st Leg, only to let Thomas Tuchel’s side back into the tie at the Santiago Bernabeu and Carlo Ancelotti will be eager to avoid any repeat here.

The Italian will have one eye on this weekend’s Clasico too. Victory in Barcelona on Sunday is essential if Real Madrid want to fight for this season’s title in Spain but ideally Ancelotti will want his side to extend his advantage over Liverpool in this tie before he thinks about resting players. He hasn’t got a huge number of fitness worries right now but Ferland Mendy and David Alaba are both set to miss this game through injury.

You never quite know what you’re going to get from Liverpool as their last two games so vividly demonstrate. From the highs of a 7-0 demolition job on bitter rivals Manchester United to a 1-0 loss at lowly Bournemouth, Jurgen Klopp’s side are an unpredictable bunch but they still have enough attacking quality that Real Madrid can’t afford to completely take their eye off the ball here.

Overall though, one look at their away record this season, not to mention the ease with which Real Madrid cut them open in the 1st Leg, suggests there should be no way back for the Reds. They’ve lost 6 of their last 10 on the road in all competitions, conceding 3 at Brentford, Brighton and Wolves during that run.

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 3-2 Liverpool (Aggregate: 8-4)

It wouldn’t be a Champions League night at the Bernabeu if there wasn’t a little bit of drama and nobody would be surprised if Liverpool took the lead here to add a bit more tension to the tie. However even if the visitors did come roaring back into this, you’d still back Real Madrid to find an extra gear and seal a place in the last eight.
