Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo Preview
Celta Vigo visit the Santiago Bernabeu to round off Saturday’s action in LaLiga Santander. Real Madrid have played some excellent football in recent weeks and will be firm favourites to pick up all the points.
Aside from an off day against an impressive Villarreal side a fortnight ago, Real Madrid have been strong throughout April, winning their other five games to nil. That includes not only a convincing win at Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey, but both legs of their UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final against Chelsea which sets up a mouthwatering clash with Manchester City in the last four.
There’s the small matter of four more league games and a cup final to squeeze in before the 1st Leg of that tie. It’s a hectic period in the season but with Real Madrid no longer seriously fighting for anything in LaLiga, Carlo Ancelotti can afford to use these games as a chance to rotate and rest players when necessary whilst trying to maintain some momentum ahead of the showdown with Osasuna in Seville and over two legs against City.
Celta Vigo are capable of giving them a test but it does feel like they’ve dropped off a little from the high standard they set earlier in the year. They’ve only taken two points from their last three games, two of which were at home, and all of which were against bottom half opposition. Monday’s 1-0 loss at Balaidos against Mallorca was a particular disappointment and despite enjoying a huge 74% share of the ball, they didn’t really do enough to test the opposition goalkeeper.
It’ll clearly be a very different kind of test here. Much of the focus may well be on Gabri Veiga who has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid among other major European clubs. A big performance on this stage would only add to the hype that is building around the 20 year old, although Celta fans probably wouldn’t be too disappointed if he had a quieter night and quieter end to the season, if it meant they could keep their latest local hero for at least another year.

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 3-1 Celta Vigo
Celta are missing their two main right-backs which should see Kevin Vazquez come in for what could be a really difficult evening up against Vini Junior. That’s one big area Real Madrid will look to exploit and they should win this game, although further defensive rotations may give Celta the opportunity to at least get on the scoresheet.
