Real Betis vs Valencia Preview

Real Betis and Valencia clash at the Benito Villamarin on the final weekend of LaLiga 2022/23. There’s not a lot riding on this for the home team but there is a scenario where the visitors will need to get a result to stay in the league, although that’s heavily dependent on what happens elsewhere.

Real Betis are guaranteed to finish 6th whatever happens so it may be a little bit difficult for their players to match the intensity of the opposition here. They’ve had another good season overall, although it has been a little bit less convincing since the turn of the year and the sight of neighbours Sevilla winning the Europa League yet again may have soured things further for Betis.

To an extent, any disappointment is merely a reflection of the way Manuel Pellegrini has raised the bar in terms of expectation levels at this club. The Betis boss may though be wondering what could have been this season, had Nabil Fekir not got injured and had his players shown a bit more discipline. There have been a staggering 15 red cards shown to Betis players in LaLiga 2022/23, the most of any club and centre-backs Luiz Felipe and German Pezzella have both been dismissed on 3 occasions each.

Valencia won’t look back on the season with much fondness but they do deserve credit for the way they’ve dug in and got results in recent weeks to all but secure safety. More often than not it has been young players who have come to their rescue. Winners from Javi Guerra, Alberto Mari and Diego Lopez have secured their last three victories while it was a 93rd minute equaliser from Samuel Lino last weekend that secured a vital late point against Espanyol, relegating their opponents in the process.

The equation on matchday 38 would have been a whole lot more complicated had Lino not scored that goal. There’d have been two relegation places yet to be decided and Valencia would have only been a point outside of danger. As it is, they will most likely stay up even if they lose this game but they can’t afford to take that as an absolute given and will be hungry for the point that would guarantee their survival.

Score Prediction

A draw will do for Valencia and they’ve shown just enough in recent weeks to suggest they are capable of coming here and putting in a competitive final day performance. Real Betis still have enough individual quality to punish their opponents but they’ve no real motive to throw everything at this in a game that from their point of view will mostly involve celebrating the career of the legendary Joaquin who is expected to start what will be his final match as a professional footballer.
