Real Betis vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Monday night football in LaLiga this week comes from the Benito Villamarin where Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano face off. Both sides are hoping to secure European qualification and we could be in for a good match here.

Inconsistent is perhaps the best word for Real Betis right now. They’ve not won back-to-back games since February and it’s just 3 wins in 12 games overall in all competitions. It has been one of their poorest periods under Manuel Pellegrini’s guidance with injuries and key players losing form a factor.

There looked a real danger that they may not just slip out of Champions League contention, but fall out of the European places altogether heading into their last game, away at Athletic Club. However, Betis picked up a priceless win with Willian Jose’s early strike sealing the three points which ensures they’ll still be in the top six whatever happens over the weekend and in this match.

Rayo are one of the teams hoping to hunt them down. The Madrid side are six points worse off as it stands but a two goal win here would give them the head-to-head advantage over Betis while reducing the gap to just three points. That’s a big ask but Rayo have put in some strong showings in difficult away games this season, having drawn at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid while they won at Villarreal.

It has been their home form that has kept them going of late with three straight wins in Vallecas including a 2-1 triumph over Real Valladolid last time out. That would have been a bit of a relief to Andoni Iraola coming at the end of a congested period which has been a test for what is not one of LaLiga’s biggest squads. They should be well rested heading into this though and ought to have their best eleven out.

Score Prediction: Real Betis 1-1 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano are very capable of coming here and making this a really competitive game. They are somewhat unfairly dubbed a team that specialises in so-called “organised chaos”, but they have the capability of playing a different way and producing strong defensive performances in tough away fixtures. Betis haven’t been brilliant in truth in recent months and a really even game looks likely here.
