Rayo Vallecano vs Girona Preview
Rayo Vallecano and Girona clash in Vallecas this weekend in a game that has the makings of a very enjoyable watch. Both sides have entertained their supporters this season whilst getting plenty of good results to go with the positive performances.
That being said, Rayo Vallecano are wobbling a little bit with a 5 game winless streak hampering their European prospects. Despite that, they remain in 7th place, which would be good enough for Conference League football in 2023/24 assuming Barcelona or Real Madrid win the Copa del Rey. However it is 3 games without scoring for Rayo and Andoni Iraola has plenty to ponder heading into this game.
In some respects, the addition of Raul De Tomas has created a headache for the Rayo boss. Sergio Camello has done an excellent job of leading the line and the team was flourishing before De Tomas became available in January. However there was always going to be some pressure on Iraola to find a way to fit such an expensive and high quality signing into the team, although so far he hasn’t quite found a way to do that successfully.
Girona boss Michel also has some selection dilemmas this weekend with a host of injury problems. The most significant is Aleix Garcia who has been outstanding in midfield for the Catalan club this season. They will certainly miss his ball-playing qualities and there are other issues in that area of the pitch with Yangel Herrera also sidelined.
They’ve been a team that has often blown hot and cold this season and that has continued in recent weeks with 3 wins and 5 defeats from their last 8 league outings. Their season could yet go in either direction with a win here propelling them to just 2 points off that 7th place and a potential path to Europe. However they still are only 4 points above the relegation zone heading into this matchday with work to do to ensure Girona are a top flight club again next term.

Girona’s injury problems and relatively poor away record points towards a home win here. Rayo haven’t been at their best of late but there is a clarity to what they want to do and we may see a stronger showing from them here with Sergio Camello potentially returning to lead the line in their usual 4-2-3-1 system.
