PSV vs Sevilla Preview
Sevilla travel to The Netherlands on Thursday to take on PSV in the 2nd Leg of their UEFA Europa League tie. After a convincing 1st Leg triumph, they are firm favourites to progress into the Last 16 of their favourite competition.
It certainly feels like Jorge Sampaoli has ridden out the storm and is in a much stronger position in what is his 2nd spell in charge of Sevilla now. They’ve won all 5 home games in 2023 including a 3-0 win over PSV last week. All the goals came in a short period either side of Half Time with Youssef En Nesyri breaking the deadlock in 1st Half Stoppage Time before Lucas Ocampos and Nemanja Gudelj added goals early in the 2nd Half.
Sevilla backed that up with a decent draw at the weekend away to Rayo in LaLiga. It wasn’t a great performance and they haven’t travelled that well in recent months but with a three goal advantage, they should be able to finish the job here. Sampaoli does have problems in defence though with Marcao, Loic Balde and Karim Rekik all injured.
PSV will be hoping to take advantage of that and they clearly do need to chase goals in this tie. Former Sevilla man Luuk de Jong should start up top again and PSV do have some talented attacking players but they didn’t look anywhere near as threatening as they did in the group stage during the 1st Leg with Cody Gakpo a big miss from their first part of the season.
They could only draw at the weekend in the Eredivisie with a 2-2 scoreline at Utrecht leaving them 6 points off the top and down in 4th place. They’ve only won 2 of their last 5 league fixtures which suggests this isn’t a particularly convincing PSV side right now and Sevilla will know they can all but kill the tie off by scoring the opener here.
Score Prediction: PSV 2-2 Sevilla (AGG: 2-5)
Both sides are still likely to name strong teams despite the clear advantage Sevilla have. Their defensive absentees does suggest PSV are not completely dead and buried here, but Sevilla looked good going forwards last week and they look capable of scoring at least once in Eindhoven which would make it very tough for PSV to come back.
