Marcus Rashford has admitted he hated playing in the Manchester United kit he wore when he scored in an iconic win four years ago.
Whether you like Manchester United or not, you have to admit that the Reds have had some iconic shirts through the years.
Some – like the gold and green Newton Heath-inspired away shirt of the early 90s – are iconic designs, while others are forever linked with legendary players such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
For a recent TikTok video, SuperSport showed Marcus Rashford and teammate Brandon Williams a series of classic United shirts and asked them to name the player they associate most with each kit.
When it came to United’s pink 2018/19 away strip, the pair had differing opinions on it. Beyond the fact that it was the first pink shirt in the club’s history, the kit will be remembered for United’s heroic 3-1 win away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.
Having lost 2-0 in the first leg at Old Trafford, United looked down and out when PSG cancelled out an early Romelu Lukaku strike to take a 3-1 aggregate lead.
But, wearing the pink strip, United battled hard and snatched a quarter-final place away from the hosts when Rashford converted a 94th-minute penalty to secure a 3-1 win and progress on away goals.
You might think that the pink shirt would hold a special place in Rashford’s heart but, despite that night in Paris, the opposite is true.
“I don’t like that kit,” Rashford admitted to Williams. “I got sent off in that kit, the first time.”
United were wearing the same kit when Rashford was sent off for a headbutt during a 2-0 win at Burnley in September 2018. It remains the only time he has received a straight red card in his professional career.
When the production team reminded Rashford that it was the shirt he wore in the famous PSG match, Rashford replied: “I know, but I never liked the kit since then.”
The events of that night in Paris will live long in the memory of fans of United’s rivals too. After full-time, United legend and BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand gave an impassioned speech during which he implored United to pay Ole Gunnar Solskjaer whatever he wanted to become manager on a permanent basis.
