Man Utd ‘enter race for Andre Onana’ with ‘Chelsea also interested’ in Inter Milan goalkeeper

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to reports.

United are in the market for a new goalkeeper as the club continues contract negotiations with David de Gea.

De Gea, 32, is out of contract this summer and United have opted against triggered a one-year extension in his deal.

United want the Spaniard to agree to a significant wage reduction in order for him to remain at Old Trafford.

While United manager Erik ten Hag wants to keep De Gea, he is also keen to bring in competition for the Spaniard, who has come under added pressure in recent months after a series of mistakes.

De Gea was at fault for Manchester City’s winner in the FA Cup final and his unconvincing distribution has raised doubts over whether he is suitable for Ten Hag’s preferred style of play.

The Guardian report that United have registered their interest in signing Onana, as have Premier League rivals Chelsea.

United have also shortlisted Porto’s Diogo Costa as they look to sign a challenger to De Gea, with Dean Henderson expected to leave Old Trafford this summer on a permanent deal.

Signing Onana would also fix a problem position for Chelsea, who will listen to offers for both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy this summer.

What would Onana bring to Man Utd or Chelsea?

Onana is excellent with the ball at his feet and impressed during Inter Milan‘s run to the Champions League final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City on Saturday.

The Guardian claim Inter could be forced to sell due to their ongoing financial problems and have lined up Brentford’s David Raya as a possible replacement.

Onana joined Inter Milan on a free transfer after leaving Ajax last summer.

He went on to make 41 appearances in his debut season in Italy, keeping 19 clean sheets.

Prior to moving to Italy, Onana spent seven-and-a-half years with Ajax, making 214 appearances in all competitions with the Dutch giants.

However, he lost his place in the side in February of last year when he was handed a 12-month doping ban, which was later reduced to nine months on appeal.
