Liverpool players given poor ratings by L’Equipe following Real Madrid battering

Liverpool players got a highest score of six in L’Equipe rankings, following their loss at the hands of Real Madrid, with scores as low as two and three.

It certainly was one of those special European nights at Anfield on Tuesday, as the Champions League returned to Merseyside for the last 16 first leg.

Unfortunately for a majority of the crowd, it wasn’t special in the way that the stadium has become known for, with the hosts well beaten by their visitors.

Liverpool did take a 2-0 lead early in the first half but were pegged back by the break, with Real going in to defeat them 5-2 and put one foot in the quarter finals.

He claimed their second half was a ‘disgrace’ and even questioned if there was any fight amongst the players, after such a humbling capitulation.

And he’s unsurprisingly not the only one who thought Jurgen Klopp’s side played badly, with the famously strict ratings from French outlet L’Equipe not reflecting well.

Having made a huge error for Real’s equaliser, goalkeeper Alisson is given a three out of 10 but it’s not the worst, with centre back Joe Gomez getting a two.

On Gomez’s display, the paper wrote, “Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly regret having started him ahead of [Joel] Matip.

“Because the English defender, who was very feverish in defence, was involved in all the goals conceded.

“He is too easily beaten by Vinicius Jr for the first, he puts Alisson Becker in difficulty with his back-pass on the second, he causes the free-kick which results in the third, he deflects the ball on the fourth and is very apathetic on the fifth.

“Klopp ended his nightmare by replacing him with Joel Matip in the 73rd minute.”

On Alisson they added, “He commits a serious blunder, by making a recovery on Vinicius which allows Real to equalise at 2-2, at a time when Liverpool gave the impression of managing the match.

“Apart from a splendid save on a curled shot from the Brazilian winger in the first half, the Reds goalkeeper failed to be decisive during this shock – proving to be totally helpless on the three goals conceded by his team in the second half.”
