Levante vs Alaves Preview
It’s the 2nd Leg of the Segunda Division play-off Final this weekend. After a goalless 1st Leg in Vitoria, it’s Levante who are the favourites to go up, particularly given they finished higher during the regular season which will be the determining factor if there are no goals on Saturday. However Alaves will know that an away goal would give them the edge in the event of a draw.
The tension in Valencia will be huge as both sides target an immediate return to the top flight. Handling the pressure of the occasion will be key and so far Levante have done a good job of that in these high stakes end of season games, at least after their damaging goalless home draw with already relegated Ibiza on matchday 40.
They won their final two regular season games to clinch 3rd, which could yet prove significant this weekend, before beating Albacete convincingly 6-1 on aggregate in their Semi-Final. Their trip to Mendizorroza was an altogether tighter affair last weekend but they’ll be content enough to be going into their home 2nd Leg level pegging and can take confidence from having lost just one home league game since Javier Calleja took charge back in October.
For Alaves, this is their second one-off game that offers them a shot at promotion back to the big time. They knew a win at Las Palmas on the final day of the season would have seen them go up, but could only manage a goalless draw in a tight, tense game in Gran Canaria.
To their credit, they picked themselves up quickly to go again in their Play-Off Semi-Final against Basque rivals Eibar where a 3-1 aggregate win was enough to secure promotion. They are dealing with a few midfield selection issues now though with veteran midfielder Salva Sevilla injured while Antonio Blanco is away on international duty with Spain U21’s who commence their Euros campaign next week.
Score Prediction: Levante 1-0 Alaves (AGG: 1-0)
The 1st Leg was tight and tense and we should probably expect a repeat here. Levante do have a few things in their favour though, most notably the support of their fans in the Ciutat de Valencia while they’ve been more of the form side in recent weeks and also beat Alaves on this ground in the league back in late April. Alaves also have the scars of narrowly missing out on promotion at Las Palmas a few weeks back and a narrow home win could be the outcome to send Levante back to the Primera.
