Las Palmas vs Alaves Preview
Officially the Segunda Division play-offs start next weekend but this is effectively an early extension of that. With Las Palmas and Alaves 2nd and 3rd respectively heading into the final weekend, the winners of this game will be promoted to the Primera Division. A draw will most likely be enough for Las Palmas too, although there is an unlikely scenario where neither of these sides are celebrating come Full Time.
The hosts can’t really afford to play for a point though and they’ll have the support of a big crowd in Gran Canaria for this one. Those fans endured a painful end to last season when their side lost to neighbours Tenerife in the Play-Offs but will be hoping this is the crowning moment for a team that has been steadily building and improving in recent years.
Las Palmas were last relegated from the top flight in 2018 but they’ve really started to look like a team worthy of a return to the big stage since the appointment of García Pimienta in early 2022. They’ve been in the promotion picture all season but vital road wins over fellow hopefuls Eibar and 8th placed Cartagena have ensured they go into this game as masters of their own fate. They are winless at home since February though with four draws and a defeat in front of their own fans since then.
That record offers some hope to Alaves who will be hoping to be party-poopers on Saturday night. Like their opponents, they have the security net of a guaranteed play-off place, but will be hoping the promotion winning experience of coach Luis Garcia can help get them over the line without the need for extending their season.
Their away record suggests that outcome is relatively unlikely. They’ve won just 6 of their 20 road fixtures this term, not great for a team that dropped out of the top flight last season and was widely expected to challenge for promotion. However they’ve only lost 1 of their last 9 matches overall and Alaves are capable of taking advantage should there be any major jitters in the home team.
Score Prediction: Las Palmas 0-1 Alaves
This is going to be a really tense, nervy affair and there’s little sign that either team will run away with it. Las Palmas are in the stronger position and are arguably the more convincing team but you wonder whether the scars of their near brush with promotion last season and surprise home defeat against Tenerife in the play-offs will have an impact on them. They also may be in two minds to some extent as to their approach here given a draw will most likely suffice. It may just be a bit easier for Alaves, for whom it’s win or go into the play-offs, to free themselves and really upset the party in Gran Canaria.
