Juventus vs Sevilla Preview
Sevilla are in Turin with their eyes now firmly set on what would be a remarkable seventh Europa League triumph. The odds were stacked against them this year in the midst of a miserable league campaign but José Luis Mendilibar’s stunning start as Sevilla boss has got their followers dreaming of another European glory night.
They’ve already had one of those with a fabulous 3-0 win over Manchester United sealing a 5-2 triumph on aggregate in the last eight. They’ve won 3 of their 4 league games since then too to keep the momentum building heading into this tie and relegation is no longer on the table with the Andalusians onto 44 points in LaLiga.
That should make it easier for Mendilibar and his team to throw everything at this tie with rotation likely when they travel to Real Valladolid this coming weekend. Sevilla have never failed to progress from a UEFA Cup/Europa League Semi-Final, most recently also seeing off United to reach the Final of the 2019/20 competition under Julen Lopetegui. They’ll need a big performance here though to ensure they are in contention heading into next week’s 2nd Leg.
Despite Sevilla’s miraculous record in this competition, Juventus are the firm favourites for this tie. The Italian giants, although not the dominant force of old, are currently 2nd in Serie A following back-to-back 4th place finishes. Massimiliano Allegri will be hoping his side are now on an upward curve again and winning a European trophy would certainly be a big step in the right direction.
In truth, Juve are lucky to even be in this competition after a disastrous Champions League group stage saw them lose 5 of their 6 games and only just pip Maccabi Haifa to 3rd place. Even their Europa League campaign started poorly with a home draw against Nantes but they’d win their next four matches, seeing off the French side away before getting the better of Freiburg and Sporting to set up this Semi-Final clash.
Score Prediction: Juventus 2-1 Sevilla
This could be a tough night for Sevilla but they won’t fear Juventus having comprehensively beaten Manchester United in the end in the last round. The Italians are the stronger side on paper though and have found a bit of form in Europe at last. They ought to be capable of winning the 1st Leg but there’s a good chance Sevilla will be very much still alive before next week’s return.
