Jurgen Klopp provides Darwin Nunez injury update ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on Darwin Nunez’s fitness ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Liverpool host the European champions at Anfield in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

Nunez suffered a shoulder injury during the win at St James’ Park after colliding with Kieran Trippier and Klopp says the Uruguayan striker is now a major doubt to face Real Madrid.

When asked if Nunez could play, Klopp said: “There’s a chance.

“From all the possible scenarios, apart from being absolutely nothing; that’s not the case.

“We have to see how he can deal with the pain [and] when we know that, we make a decision.”

Speaking after the weekend win at Newcastle, Klopp had initially said: “The bad news is Darwin has something on his shoulder. We will see. In that situation, I don’t know what he whistled at to be honest, against him.

“In the end he had to go off with a shoulder issue and we need further assessments. I don’t know in the moment. In the moment it’s painful. Hopefully it’s just painful and nothing more.”

Nunez now faces a race against time to feature in Tuesday’s match at Anfield.

Liverpool are already without Luis Diaz [knee], Arthur Melo [thigh], Ibrahima Konate [hamstring], Thiago Alcantara [hip] and Calvin Ramsay [back].

But Madrid are not without injury problems of their own.

Karim Benzema is part of the squad but doubts remain over whether the France international will be fit to start against Liverpool after missing Saturday’s win over Osasuna.
