Jurgen Klopp ‘expects’ 24-year-old to ask for transfer, he has three years left on his deal

Liverpool are expecting their backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to ask to leave the club this summer in search of more regular game time.

The Reds have struggled massively this season and their latest blow came on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City.

They face a huge challenge to rebuild the squad in the summer so they can get challenging again, and a new goalkeeper might have to be a priority on their transfer list.

That’s because current backup shot-stopper Kelleher is expected to ask for a transfer, according to Football Insider.

Given the importance of Allison to Liverpool it’s unlikely there will be a regular spot at Anfield for Kelleher anytime soon so the Republic of Ireland international is likely to move away.

He’s made three appearances across both domestic cups for the Reds this season and was the hero in their Carabao Cup penalty shootout win last year.

However, he wants to become the first-choice keeper at his next club and is open to options in the Premier League and abroad.

He’s under a long contract

His current deal at the Merseyside club runs until 2026 so Liverpool will be able to command a decent fee for him.

A report last month stated that they want around £30m and will not stand in his way if he wants to leave.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly interested in bringing him to Leicester City but they are currently locked in a relegation battle.

Aston Villa is another potential option, but if their current first choice Emiliano Martinez stays, it’s unlikely Kelleher would be number one.
