Jamie Carragher urges Man Utd legends to accept that Man City are better than their treble team

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United and Arsenal legends to accept that the current Manchester City side is better than their treble-winning and Invincible teams.

The first team to achieve the feat was United in 1999, with that side deemed by many to be the greatest of the Premier League era.

Others argue that the Arsenal Invincibles side of 2003/04 was the best, with Arsene Wenger‘s side becoming just the second team in English football – after Preston North End in 1888/89 – to go an entire top division season unbeaten.

There have been worthy contenders since then, such as Liverpool‘s 2019/20 side that won the Premier League by 18 points.

And a number of Pep Guardiola sides could also be candidates, with the Spaniard having won five league titles with City in the last six seasons.

There is an acceptance, though, that this season’s City squad is the best he has managed, especially given the potent attacking prowess of Erling Haaland.

And Carragher has urged United and Arsenal legends to recognise Guardiola’s men as being better than their great sides.

Carragher sends message to Man Utd, Arsenal

Taking to Twitter ahead of the Premier League final, Carragher wrote: “UCL final tonight and I want Inter Milan to win obviously!

“But is there any past player out there who played for Man Utd’s treble team or the Arsenal Invincibles who can just be honest and say this Manchester City team are better than their own team!!!”

A number of United legends, including Carragher’s Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville, have argued that City cannot be considered better than the 1999 treble-winning side.

One Arsenal Invincible, however, has been slightly more open in his view. Gunners icon Patrick Vieira told the Evening Standard earlier this week: “I think the Invincibles will also one day be matched. City are in the debate [for the greatest English team] with United’s 1999 treble team and my Invincibles.”
