“It was just a sh***y day.”

Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel has commented on the mistake that cost his team so dearly in their anti-climactic showdown with the German giants. Kobel’s head coach remained supportive of his first-choice keeper. 

Gregor Kobel utilized the same vulgar word repeated time and again by his coach and captain when commenting on Saturday night’s humiliating no-contest loss to restored league leaders FC Bayern München. For the first-choice keeper between the sticks, the matchday 26 shellacking was a “right old shitty day.”

Kobel noted that he felt a sense of deja vu. The last time he returned from an injury spell – on the current campaign’s 10th matchday – there were similar errors against 1. FC Union Berlin. The 25-year-old Swiss international could only lament the fact that he’s had problems after sitting a few matches out.

“I’ve come back twice now after an injury and made two relatively big mistakes right after that,” Kobel told the Sky mics “Maybe I have to see if I can do something better. There are just shitty days. Today was one of those. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help the team.”

Kobel didn’t seem to be in much of a self critical mood when it came to the decision to rush off his line itself in the 13th minute. The BVB net-minder assessed the choice to come out as “right and proper”. The true mistake was not hitting the ball, something Kobel conceded that he had “no idea” how he failed to do.

Kobel also wasn’t so sure that – as some of the television pundits pointed out – he was also at fault for spilling the rebound on the third Bayern goal. From Kobel’s perspective, the manner in which Thomas Müller tracks and lurks isn’t something one can always anticipate.

“It [Sané’s effort] was a powerful that I did relatively well to parry to the side,” Kobel said, “Thomas Müller is also such a player who positions himself well and has a great nose for goal. The first one is on me, otherwise I don’t see much.”

Edin Terzic – like his captain – has expressed support for Kobel.

“We mustn’t forget that this man is the reason why we entered this match as league leaders,” Terzic said, “He’s sorry, of course, but it’s important for me to put it all into context.”
