Christopher O’Connell has loved a formidable Indian Wells main-draw debut, recovering from a set all the way down to defeat in-form Brit Jack Draper.
O’Connell’s 1-6 6-3 6-2 triumph units up a second-round conflict with No.6 seed Alexander Zverev on the ATP Masters 1000 event.
One other Aussie advancing was Thanasi Kokkinakis, who beat native Marcos Giron to ebook a conflict with reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner.
Kokkinakis will look to inflict the season’s first defeat on Sinner, who has constructed an unblemished 12-0 report up to now in 2024.
O’Connell, who fell within the qualifying rounds at Indian Wells prior to now two years, received six consecutive video games from 0-2 within the third set to defeat Draper, who was coming into the event following a semifinal run in Acapulco.
