Indian skipper Rohit Sharma survived twice in the first over of the third Test match as Australia didn’t take review on both occasions in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Wednesday, March 1. Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that the Aussies didn’t take review because they didn’t want to lose it at the start of the innings.
There was a lot of drama in the first over of India’s innings, which was bowled by Mitchell Starc. The Australian fielders made a strong appeal in the first ball of the match, but the umpire ruled in favor of the batter. After the discussions with wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Steve Smith decided not to take a review, but replays showed that Rohit nicked that ball as there was a spike on UltraEdge.

A couple of balls later, the left-arm seamer trapped Rohit in front of the stumps. Once again, Smith decided not to go for the DRS despite the ball hitting the batter’s pads in front of the stumps. It again proved to be a howler, as replays showed three reds, and the Indian skipper would have gone had they taken a review.

Captains Should Be Thinking Would It Be Umpire’s Call – Sunil Gavaskar
During the lunch break, Gavaskar stated that it was a difficult choice as the Australians did not want to lose the review in the first over of the match. He suggested that captains consider the umpire’s call before making a decision so they wouldn’t lose the review.
“It’s very difficult. You have got three reviews and it’s the first ball of the match and it’s the first over of the match. You don’t want to lose a review. A lot of times, captains should be thinking would it be umpire’s call even if it doesn’t go in their favour. If it is umpire’s call, you don’t lose the review. So that is also something that you have to keep in the back of your mind,” said Gavaskar.
