Girona vs Mallorca Preview
Girona and Mallorca face off this Thursday as two teams who are having impressive seasons meet. Both sides have already passed the 40 point mark which is normally sufficient for safety and both retain an outside shot at qualifying for Europe.
Victory here would move Girona onto 47 points, the same number 7th placed Athletic Club currently have, and they’d be right in contention for at least a place in the UEFA Conference League. That would be an outstanding achievement for a newly promoted team and on current form, you can’t rule Girona out.
They’ve won three of their last four games and come into this following really impressive wins over Real Madrid at Montilivi and away at in-form Sevilla. Those results look even better when you consider the extensive selection problems that Girona currently have. They are missing a number of key men, especially in midfield with Borja Garcia, Aleix Garcia and Yangel Herrera all currently sidelined. Michel will be hoping his team has enough gas left in the tank for one more big performance here.
Mallorca are also in reasonably good form with just one defeat in six league outings and that came in a tough fixture away to Atletico Madrid where Javier Aguirre opted to rest some key players. Their chances of propelling themselves into serious European contention were dealt a late, late blow on Monday night. Leading Athletic 1-0 heading into Stoppage Time, Mallorca conceded a penalty which Inaki Williams converted in the 96th minute to ensure the Basques left with a point.
The Balearic side would have been just 3 points off the final potential European place had they held on. Their goalscorer on Monday was again Kang-in Lee who also bagged a brace in the 3-1 win over Getafe prior to that. The Korean is having a breakthrough season in which he has delivered on a much more consistent basis than we’ve seen in previous years.

Score Prediction: Girona 2-1 Mallorca
This should be a competitive game between two sides who play very different styles of football. Both sides have some considerable selection issues with Mallorca missing two players to suspension while Girona’s injury problems remain. On current form, particularly at Montilivi, it’s hard to look past Michel’s side though and they’d be right in the thick of the European race should they win this.
