Getafe vs Valencia Preview

Getafe host Valencia at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in this matchday’s Monday night fixture. The two sides would have predicted mid-table status prior to the season, however now both are in the relegation zone after disappointing in the first half of the season and they find themselves desperately looking to pick up points.

Despite not winning a game since the turn of the year, Getafe have remained competitive in all of their matches through a tough run. Most recently, they picked up two points in respective 1-1 draws in Madrid derbies against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. Star forward Enes Ünal netted in both of those games, once again displaying his goalscoring threat as the Turkish international has scored three out of Getafe’s four league goals since the start of 2023.

If Quique Sanches Flores’ side are being analysed through their recent performances, then it would show that the team isn’t lacking much in terms of effort or playing style. However, as previously mentioned, the club have failed to pick up sufficient points and now find themselves 19th in the table so points are becoming a necessity for the side from Madrid.

Their opponents, Valencia, sit only one point ahead and in 18th. One of Spain’s big four, they may carry a rich history, but in recent times have struggled on and off the pitch, with disputes between owner and fans more prevalent than ever. Like Getafe, Valencia have not won a game this year and have slipped down the table and astonishingly find themselves in a battle against the drop. Last time out, the Bats hosted Athletic Club at Mestalla and despite taking the lead, Valencia ended up losing the game 2-1.

Valencia in fact did not start the season too poorly, picking up fifteen out of the first twenty seven available points and performing against some of the bigger sides in the league. However, the side have now been under-performing for months and with players not experienced in battling relegation, it remains to be seen whether this is just a short term stay in the bottom three or if a side with such a big name really is a candidate for relegation.

After Voro’s short caretaker stint, Valencia will be under the guidance of newly appointed Rubén Baraja here. The 47 year old is a club legend, but has been out of work since getting sacked by second tier Zaragoza in late 2020.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Getafe

INJURED
DOUBTFUL Milla
BANNED Aleñá

Possible XI: Soria – Alderete, Duarte, Djene – Iglesias, Villar, Arambarri, Algobia, Portu – Unal, Mayoral (3-5-2)

Coach: Quique Sanchez Flores

Valencia

INJURED Domenech, Cavani, Correia
DOUBTFUL Nico Gonzalez
BANNED Castillejo

Possible XI: Mamardashvili – Gaya, Diakhaby, Gabriel, Foulquier – Kluivert, Almeida, Guillamon, Musah – Lino, Duro (4-4-2)

Score Prediction: Getafe 1-1 Valencia

Not only has neither side won since the turn of the year, their draws and losses have not necessarily been goalfests and this match may be another cagey affair with neither side wanting to lose. For these reasons, a 1-1 draw seems a likely result.
