Getafe vs Celta Vigo Preview

Jose Bordalas is back at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez as Getafe boss again and this is an absolutely enormous football match for the hosts. Three straight defeats have seen them sink to 19th in the table and they really need to win this game.

With initial reports suggesting Bordalas had turned down the chance to take over from Quique Sanchez Flores, it was a bit of a surprise to see him reinstated prior to Sunday’s game at relegation rivals Espanyol. The change did not have any immediate benefits for Getafe though as a 1-0 defeat in that game came courtesy of Joselu’s 1st Half penalty.

It’s less than two years since Bordalas departed Getafe at the end of the 2020/21 season, so he will know many of these players and will have a good idea of what he wants from this side. It’s a squad that is relatively well suited to playing 4-4-2 with Enes Unal and Borja Mayoral already enjoying a strong relationship in attack. It’s unlikely to be pretty, but Getafe desperately need to find a way to win this match with a daunting trip to the Santiago Bernabeu up next.

Celta Vigo aren’t in great form and their mid-table ranking means they are the kind of team that a relegation-threatened side like Getafe won’t mind playing at this point in the season. There is still a bit of work to be done for Carlos Carvalhal and his team as their current tally of 39 points does not guarantee survival but they are not far from reaching that target.

Staying up was certainly the only realistic goal when Carvalhal took over. The Portuguese boss did so well initially that talk of Europe started around the time of the last international break but just 5 points from 6 games since then has proved something of a reality check. They were 2-0 down inside 12 minutes at the weekend against Villarreal, although they did opt to leave key men Iago Aspas and Gabri Veiga on the bench for that game.

Score Prediction: Getafe 1-0 Celta Vigo

On paper, Getafe should have enough in their side to beat the drop which makes their decline in recent weeks a bit surprising. Appointing Bordalas was perhaps the best decision they could realistically have made at this late stage in the campaign though and with Celta not playing particularly well at the moment, Getafe may just edge this one to claim a vital three points.
