Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed what he believes to be his ‘true’ transfer value in today’s market after previously suggesting he would be worth around £35m.
Agbonlahor, who retired from football in 2019 at the age of 32, scored 86 times and registered 60 assists in 391 appearances for boyhood club Villa.
The 36-year-old footballer-turned-pundit was also capped three times for England, with Agbonlahor playing against the likes of Germany, Spain and Belarus.
Transfermarkt valued a 23-year-old Agbonlahor at around £14.8m in 2010, which the website believed to be his peak transfer market value.
However, Agbonlahor previously suggested that he would be worth around £35m in today’s market, which prompted a mixed reception from fans over his price tag.
When asked his value in 2021 at the ‘peak of his powers,’ he told talkSPORT: “No, 10 times more than [Jamie] O’Hara, so I reckon he would be like £3.5m. So maybe £35m [for myself]?”
Speaking to SPORTbible in an exclusive interview, Agbonlahor was asked about his £35m valuation and he admitted that it was “me having a bit of banter” on talkSPORT.
But the Villa hero believed that he would “definitely” command a hefty £50m transfer value in today’s market thanks to his key attributes and the fact he represented England.
When asked about his transfer value now, Agbonlahor told SPORTbible: “Yeah, that [£35m price tag] was me having a bit of banter.
“If I’m honest, and I feel like peak Gaby, now, I would say probably £50m only because I was [an] England international, play for my country — which helps, you know, if you play for England [it] helps — I was so quick.
“And if you look at players now, teams are dying for players that are quick. You know, you look at [Mykhailo] Mudryk, like Chelsea and Arsenal were going for him because of his pace. Right, he hasn’t been emphatic at Shakhtar [Donetsk].
“So, I think now in this market, I would say yeah, I’d say in my prime, I would say yeah, probably £50m.
“Definitely not 35; 35 is like nothing now, is it? It’s peanuts, I would say definitely [a] £50m player now. It was me having a bit of banter and trying to be a bit modest.
“But if I’m being serious, I feel like peak Gabby, the goals I scored at the Emirates and against Manchester United away and I’ll say my all-round game.
“I think £50m and then I probably would have kicked on by being in a better team and being [in with] a better coach or whatever. So, I think that’s a fair amount.”
The talkSPORT pundit added: “And there’s one I feel like me, you look at [Gabriel] Martinelli, you know, I mean, like, pace kills now.
“You look at [Sadio] Mane, you look at [Luis] Diaz. Like, the top teams now they want their wingers to be rapid, you know, and if there’s not them rapid players out there, most teams struggle.
“So, I think that I would have definitely been about £50m, 100 per cent.”
