Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas tells Reds target to avoid move to Anfield this summer

Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas has sent a warning to Celta Vigo starlet Gabri Veiga over a potential move to Anfield or another top European stadium this summer.

Veiga, who is 20 years of age, has lit up La Liga this season in what is his breakout season in senior football.

An attacking midfielder who stands at 6ft tall, the Spaniard is an aggressive player who likes to run with the ball and create goalscoring opportunities.

He has also chipped in with a number of goals himself, netting on nine occasions in La Liga thus far this season.

His performances earned him the league’s player of the month award for February, and is on the cusp of receiving a call-up to the Spain senior national squad.

Veiga was named in the U21 squad for their matches during the international break, but was forced to withdraw due to a muscular problem, as reported by AS.

But he has been sent a message about a potential move by a current team-mate.

Aspas sends warning to Liverpool target

Aspas, who currently lines up alongside Veiga at Celta, has had an incredible career at the club, scoring 196 goals in nearly 450 appearances for the club across two spells.

In 2013, at the age of 25, he was signed by Liverpool, with then manager Brendan Rodgers looking to add more firepower to his squad.

But Aspas’ move to England failed to work out, and he did not score a single goal in the Premier League in 14 appearances during his first season at the club.

He then left Anfield to join Sevilla on loan for the following campaign, before resigning for Celta on a permanent deal a year later.

And while the 35-year-old is one of Spanish football’s top strikers – he has broken the 15-goal barrier in La Liga in four separate seasons since returning to Celta – he knows all about the pitfalls that can be caused by a move to a bigger club at the wrong time.

Speaking to AS, he gave some advice to Veiga over a move to Liverpool, or another top European club, this summer.

He explained: “What I recommend to Gabri, who is very good and also very young, is that he stay at Celta for at least one more season.

“Next season is Celta’s centenary. And I would like Gabri Veiga to stay with us. Then, he will be able to choose to play wherever he wants, because his potential is fantastic.

“He is followed by great clubs, I know. But Gabri is 20 years old and has time ahead of him.”
