A former Arsenal physio says the membership made a £20 million revenue on a widely known worldwide participant after they discovered “early indicators of knee degeneration” in his medical.
Gary Lewin, who spent 22 years at Arsenal between 1986 and 2008, recalled the story on an episode of Ben Foster’s Fozcast podcast.
The 59-year-old was explaining the method of a medical when he introduced the unnamed participant into dialog.
“We signed a participant for about £5 million – a widely known worldwide participant. He had a cruciate damage 18 months earlier than we signed him,” Lewin stated.
“We did a full medical on him and we noticed an orthopaedic surgeon and the surgeon stated, ‘He is obtained early indicators of degeneration of the knee that he is had surgical procedure on, you’ll get three or 4 years out of him at this stage, then that knee will begin to degenerate’.”
Lewin added: “We went again to the board, graded that threat, spoke to the supervisor, and he stated, ‘We will signal him, that is nice data to have, I’ll use that sooner or later’.
“I assumed nothing of it. Two and a half years later, we might gained just a few trophies and he was a giant a part of that. We then bought him to a different European membership for £25 million. 18 months after that he retired.”
No claims have been made suggesting Arsenal bought the participant understanding he could be unable to play for for much longer.
As talked about above, Lewin spoke a couple of participant that was purchased for £5 million and bought for £25 million, which might doubtlessly level in the direction of former Gunners winger Marc Overmars.
Overmars joined the North London membership from Ajax in 1997 and would go on to flourish in his brief spell, scoring 41 targets in 142 appearances.
He was then bought to Barcelona for a reported £25 million in 2000, which made him the costliest participant in Dutch soccer historical past.
However the former Netherlands worldwide retired in 2004, aged 31, resulting from a persistent knee damage.
“My footballing future ends now,” he stated on the time. “My knee is inflicting too many issues and I simply can’t play on the stage I would want any extra.”
