Ex-Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claims the club did something no other side could in Liverpool win

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon sent a warning to Los Blancos’ Champions League rivals following the club’s 5-2 victory over Liverpool.

Liverpool’s dismal season was subjected to yet another low on Tuesday as Real inflicted the Reds with their heaviest home defeat in Champions League history in the competition’s last-16.

The Merseyside club took a two-goal lead within the first 20 minutes, only for Vinicius Junior’s brace to cancel out their advantage before half-time.

The La Liga giants then went on to net three unanswered goals in the second half – two of which were scored by Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema.

The defeat means Liverpool have it all to do to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

On the second leg in Madrid against the holders on Wednesday, 15 March, Klopp said: “We will go there and play a football game. It will be a massive challenge. We have to make sure we learn from this game.”

Real Madrid warning

Real’s former president, Calderon warned competitors that the Champions League belonged to the Madristas.

Last season, Real lifted the Champions League trophy for a record 14th time after beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Meanwhile, in the last decade, the La Liga club claimed Europe’s premier competition four times in five seasons between 2013 and 2018.

On Real’s record in the competition, Calderon told TalkSPORT: “No doubt [Madrid have incredible mental strength].

“That is something special for our club. We showed that last season with those three matches in the Champions League by doing something no other team would be able to do.

“And again we showed that last night. It’s true that after 15 minutes we were losing 2-0 in Liverpool, with all the people backing and supporting the club with that atmosphere in Anfield. Amazing.

“I don’t think any other team is able to do something like that. As you said [Madrid] are mentally very, very strong, especially in the Champions League.

“This is our competition. We are always proud of that, and we did it again.”
