Elche vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid are bidding to extend their fine run of form when they travel to already relegated Elche this weekend. Diego Simeone’s side are now looking good to finish 2nd in LaLiga which would represent some recovery after a very poor start to the season.

As for Elche, they have just five more games now before they are put out of their misery. With 16 points from 33 games, this has been a disastrous season but their recent 4-0 win over Rayo was a brief bright spot. That came in their last outing at home so they can take a bit of confidence from that and the result ensured they bettered the record for the worst ever Spanish top flight season.

The lowest points tally in the 21st Century is 20 points so they still have some way to go to better that. They were competitive again last time out, losing 2-1 at Almeria and boss Sebastián Beccacece will be hoping to use this period to build towards next season in the Segunda Division with his contract running to the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Diego Simeone’s deal at Atletico Madrid also runs until June 2024 and there was speculation that he wouldn’t even get that far earlier this season when Atleti were really struggling. However they have been getting better and better as the campaign has gone on and are currently playing some of the best football they’ve produced during Simeone’s tenure.

That’s not to say they are the complete side just yet. They’ve gone six matches without a clean sheet and did fall just short in the recent showdown with leaders Barcelona. It’s 9 wins from 10 league games now for Atleti and while they have no chance of catching the Catalans who could win the title on Sunday night, the side from the capital are certainly showing all the signs that they may be ready for a serious title push next term.

Score Prediction: Elche 1-4 Atletico Madrid

We’re not used to Atletico Madrid scoring quite as freely as this with Antoine Griezmann arguably the most in-form player in world football right now. The Frenchman is making everything tick and against LaLiga’s worst defence and worst team, we should see another convincing Atleti win here.
