Defending Madrid Champion Jabeur Pulls out with Calf Injury

Defending champion Ons Jabeur has been forced to withdraw from this year’s Madrid Open due to the calf injury she picked up during her semifinal with Iga Swiatek at Stuttgart. Jabeur retired from the match after three games. On Monday she gave an update status.

“Further to many medical exams done, it shows that I have a small tear in my calf and I will need more time to recover,” she wrote on social media. “I am sad to announce that I won’t be able to compete and defend my title at Madrid.”

Jabeur was placed in yesterday’s draw at Madrid as the No.4 seed. She will be replaced by a lucky loser.

It has been a rough season for the Tunisian, who underwent minor knee surgery in February and was just beginning to regain her form when she injured her calf in Stuttgart. She won the Charleston title in early April and carried a seven-match winning streak into her semifinal with Swiatek.
