D’Angelo Russell sprains ankle, exits Warriors-Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell suffers a right ankle sprain in the first half at Crypto.com Arena.

D’Angelo Russell sprained his ankle in the first quarter and was ruled out of the Lakers’ home game against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. TNT’s Chris Haynes later reported that x-rays were negative and an MRI would not be necessary to further evaluate the injury.

Russell, acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 3-team trade on Feb. 9, entered Thursday’s game averaging 17.9 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 39% from 3-point range on the season.

The Lakers used the trade deadline to bolster the supporting cast around star players LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Russell, originally drafted No. 2 overall by L.A. in 2015, was part of that effort.

The Lakers entered Thursday in 13th place in the Western Conference, three losses below 10th place for the final spot for The Play-In Tournament.
