The Monday night game in LaLiga this week comes from Balaidos where Mallorca are the visitors. They face a tough task against a Celta Vigo side that has been one of the standout performers in 2023 in LaLiga.

The Galicians did look to be on their way to a first defeat in seven outings last time out before staging a dramatic fightback with 89th and 93rd minute goals to take a 2-2 draw from their trip to Sevilla. Even though their opponents ended the game with only nine men, it would still have felt like a really positive result for Celta and they’ll continue to carry belief into this game as a result.

They are boosted too by the return of Gabri Veiga who was suspended for the trip to Andalusia. His importance has been proven many times already this season but there have been plenty of other strong individual performers this season for Celta. The main improvements since Carlos Carvalhal came in have taken place in defence with Joseph Aidoo and Unai Nunez forming a strong central partnership while Javi Galan continues to shine at left-back.

Mallorca have gained a reputation for low-scoring and at times not particularly inspiring football under Javier Aguirre, so few could have foreseen the six goal thriller that played out in their last game at lowly Real Valladolid. A brace from Vedat Muriqi ensured the Balearic Islanders picked up a 3-3 draw with the Kosovo international now on 12 goals for the season, as many as the rest of the Mallorca squad combined have managed.

Easing that dependence will be a priority this summer for Mallorca, not to mention holding onto Muriqi who may well attract suitors from elsewhere given the relative lack of top strikers around Europe. Overall though, the fact that with ten games to go, we are not really talking about Mallorca in terms of a relegation battle, is testament to the good job Aguirre has done with the club now feeling much more established at this level after the yo-yo years that preceded last season’s return to the top flight.

Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 2-0 Mallorca

Mallorca collected their first away point in five months last weekend at Valladolid but it’ll be tough for them to repeat the trick here. Celta look like a solid team now with a much improved defence and some genuine goalscoring options. They should have a bit too much for their visitors here.
