Celta Vigo and Elche meet at Balaidos on Wednesday. Both sides were beaten at the weekend but Celta will be firm favourites to get back on track with three points here against Segunda Division bound Elche.

Talk of a Celta European challenge has cooled considerably after a run of four winless games in LaLiga, culminating in a 2-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu at the weekend. With only 36 points on the board, they do have a bit of work to do in order to guarantee their top flight status for another year but any relegation worries would be all but extinguished with victory here.

It’ll be interesting to see what Carlos Carvalhal opts to do in terms of selection. He has been relatively consistent in terms of his chosen personnel since the turn of the year, but some rotation may help to freshen things up, particularly in the final third. That could offer the likes of Oscar Rodriguez, Franco Cervi and Jorgen Strand Larsen a chance to stake their claim for more regular action.

Elche meanwhile travel to Galicia on the back of yet another defeat and yet more calamitous defending. Gonzalo Verdu’s own goal ensured they were beaten 2-0 at home by regional rivals Valencia to leave Sebastián Beccacece still waiting for his first point after he replaced Pablo Machin.

It’s hard to see where Elche’s points are going to come from as they aim to avoid unwanted records between now and the end of the campaign. While they’ve been relatively competitive in some of their recent matches, they’ve lacked cutting edge in the final third and have invariably continued to make defensive errors. They can’t afford a repeat here with Iago Aspas and Gabri Veiga the men most likely to pounce for the home team.

Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 2-0 Elche

Elche are on the brink of having their relegation confirmed and they look like a side that has totally lost confidence in what they are trying to do. The sheer extent of their demise this season has been surprising and even in the kindest of fixtures, they are finding a way to fall short. This should be a good opportunity for Celta to get back on track with three points.
