Celta Vigo vs Almeria Preview
Celta Vigo face Almeria at Balaidos this weekend and they’ll be firm favourites after a fantastic start to 2023. They’ve collected more points than Real Madrid since the World Cup and they’ll be looking to kick on now and target an unlikely European place.
At the heart of everything in an attacking sense for Celta, are two Galicians from the Vigo area. Iago Aspas and Gabri Veiga are very much at opposite ends of their careers but they are giving Celta the kind of goal threat the few teams in this division have. Between them, the duo have scored 66% of Celta’s league goals this season with Aspas on 12 and Veiga on 9, an outstanding return for a 20 year old midfielder.
While they may receive fewer plaudits, Celta’s revival is as much to do with improvements in defence as it is matters at the other end. Unai Nunez and Joseph Aidoo have formed a strong pairing with both arguably playing the best football of their careers to date. Celta have conceded just 3 goals in their last 6 games coming into this.
There is little prospect of Almeria going on a run like that. Only Elche have conceded more than their tally of 45 goals against this season and only Elche are currently below Almeria in the table. When it comes to away points, Almeria are rock bottom with just 3 all season and those kinds of statistics alone explain why they will do very well to get a result away to in-form Celta.
It’s not just in defence where Rubi will be scratching his head though with a season-ending injury to top scorer El Bilal Toure another significant blow. They do at least have some other strong options in the final third with Colombian striker Luis Suarez the man most likely to lead the line for the remainder of the season now. The likes of Gonzalo Melero and Leo Baptistao will also need to chip in as Almeria battle for survival.

Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 3-0 Almeria
It’s hard to see anything other than a Celta win here. They’ve been outstanding in recent months and have recorded 3-0 wins in their last two outings at Balaidos. A repeat would be no surprise here with Aspas and Veiga firing and Almeria weak defensively.
